Pipa articulated, in its article on the struggles of the 30 member-countries of the OECD Development Assistance Committee to translate for domestic use the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Agenda, that “Government should adopt servant leader mindsets guiding but not dominating, embracing new ideas, and challenging and complementing existing structures. By taking such a stance, they can mobilize and harness the efforts of the society to fulfill its agenda and activities.” Locally, it would be interesting for internal auditors to get an insight into the mindset of new emerging leaders in government and hear their plans for the future. Internal Auditors in the public sector are well-positioned to support the governance responsibilities of oversight, insight, and foresight that government leaders can appreciate in fulfilling their role responsibly, effectively, and with transparency.

In an article in IAONLINE.THEIIA.ORG, it said: “There are no rules that can help auditors preserve their independence in every situation they may encounter while doing their jobs. Being unaware of their impaired independence does not excuse auditors from responsibility. On the contrary, it is up to all auditors to recognize the situation they are in and to adequately protect themselves. With the right approach to engagements, auditors can eliminate the possibility of compromising their independence." So, what internal auditors need to do create that balance while protecting themselves and how?

The best leaders are those who can successfully influence and drive behavior change across all levels in the organization to achieve excellent and impactful, business results. The ability to motivate and inspire others to take action is one of the most important qualities of a great leader. With Internal Auditors covering a wide range of activities and, as such, interacts with all levels in the organization, it is important to leverage its leadership position and be an agent of change to help the organization achieve its goals.
